When Yuka’s quiet, weird-kid nature turned out to be the shamanic calling, their father did what any self-respecting loyalist would do and sent them away to a boarding school he knew would suppress the calling by any means necessary. Unfortunately for Yuka, this only further singled them out as the weird kid and resulted in a rather lonely and ostracized childhood. After years of growing up with such treatment, the anger, fear, and exhaustion manifested itself into a hollowed raven spirit that beckoned Yuka to take the chance of an open window and take back control of their life.
Originally grateful for the assistance of the raven spirit, they quickly found themself struggling with vengeful urges and demands of bloodier undertakings. To make matters even more complicated, Yuka's violent actions turned them into a mysterious hero praised by local folk for challenging the oppressive ruling class with their own methods. Stuck between doing what was expected of them by both the spirit and locals or turning their back on the people counting on them, Yuka tried to ignore the raven's demands at the risk of their sanity, unaware of the taut connection between their own spirit and the raven.
Once again seeking to take back control of their own life, Yuka fights their way to the sacred spring in hopes that they can enlist a divine miracle to free themself from the spirit and then find a nice hole to hide in for the next billion years so no one can ever bother them again. Instead, Yuka finds the spring alive with the spirit-gods offering them the role of the next vodjmir. Feeling quite undeserving of the role due to what they feel is an undeserving past (as well as wistfully thinking of the billion-year hole), Yuka hesitantly accepts, afraid of letting everyone down yet also relieved that the raven spirit was no more. With the hawk spirit Vonyova reassuring them that they were chosen for a reason, Yuka starts to feel that their weird nature was just being soft-spoken and distracted by things only they could see. With new confidence and the billion-year backup plan hole in the back of their mind, Yuka is only slightly freaking out at the thought of having to fill the empty space left by Ksunya’s death and decides the best way to begin filling that space is by meeting the tsaritsa.
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway. Because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. - Vonyova - Their guiding spirit and closest friend. The two of them share a sibling-like relationship that Yuka cherishes greatly, especially with how Yuka doesn't have much family of their own. They didn't expect the daughter of the Great White Hawk Spirit to have a mullet though.
- Tsaritsa Yelenovna - Kept their distance when they first met her seeing as how her public image was that of a cold-hearted dictator and she had the closed-off disposition to go with it. Of course, once she confided in them the reasons behind her behavior and her more passive (but still guilty) role in the war, the two of them began to get closer, Yuka helping her get set on the path preventing more damage and the Tsaritsa becoming the older family member who shares all the castle gossip over tea. Yuka enjoys her company, exquisite tea selection, and taste in fashion.
- High King Vadim - He's kinda weird.
- Ksunya - Even years after her death, Yuka can still feel the weight of her legacy and the expectations of fulfilling it that come with. They have really big shoes to fill, both figuratively and literally.
- The Sovskovan Pantheon - Considers them their extended family. All of them are akin to weird aunts and uncles that pop up from time to time to offer spirital guidance or life advice (such as which rodents taste the best).
- Technically Yuka's pronouns are more like "it depends" because their gender category allows them to fulfill roles meant for both men and women. For example, if the sacred ritual is missing a woman figure, Yuka can step in and essentially take up the role of a woman within the ritual (including being referred to as such since within this moment they—or she—will be a woman). On a normal day if you ask them "so, are you like a man or a woman?" they'll shrug and say "hmm... sometimes!"
- Illiterate because: first, no one taught them to read; second, being forced to learn to read just wasn't doing anything; and third, once they became vodjmir they decided to just stay illiterate for religious reasons.
- The name "Yuka" came from shallow Google searches for Inuit-related names starting with "Y." Some sites say it means "bright star" or "star" which I'm sure is isn't right in the slightest and is probably made up by white people HOWEVER I thought the name sounded perfect so here we are. Thank you MomJunction dot com.
- Yeah so Yuka is the legally distinct fantasy AU version of Yakov (ILL LINK THIS SOMEDAY) whatever (and if you see me he/him them it's from 1, this background and 2, the fact I only relatively recently made that change; insert "his pronouns are they/them" meme here)

Yuka's typical outfit for day-to-day vodjmir things. A combination of both work-ready and stylish. The "claws" of the boots were probably an addition suggested by the Tsaritsa, thinking of Ksunya's boots (even if they do scuff the shit out of the centuries-old palace flooring). Poncho splits into two in the back to sorta give off the idea of wings to match Vonyova. I think they should have face tattoos... but I forgor....
Image comes from the RS Seminar Capstone (LINK SOMEDAY...). As I only had about a week to do this design (with five classes happening alongside it), I decided to do a simple rendition of the hollowed shaman fit. Both are half-baked due to the time crunch, but not bad...?

First time I drew the Tsaritsa saying this to Yuka. This was back when a ribbon in one's braid was more of a simple of young adulthood and not being in a relationship, so Yuka has a ribbon here. You can also see a glimpse into trying to come up with a part of the Tsaritsa's name off to the side. In the edited version of this image (used on the Tsaritsa's page) I moved stuff around so you can't see the rest sowwwyyy.

The pre-vodjmir fit complete with the evil raven and a poncho that looks a little to big for them (which may or may not have be done on purpose... look I was really busy and didn't have time to let the sketch simmer okay). The idea was that Yuka needed to look closed-off and threatening sorta in the sense an "I don't know what that guy has under that big ass poncho" way to reflect their distant and unknown nature. The shiny details and colors are supposed to be reminiscent of a raven. They have no glove yet so their hands have a whole bunch of scratches on them from the raven. Don't ask me where he got the fit from cause I DON'T know.
Image itself comes from the RS Seminar Capstone (LINKKKK). Like the other Yuka image from the capstone, it's turbo half-baked but not, like, terrible. Also if you can tell what book I lowkey highkey referenced the raven from then... how? How????

Okay so I don't remember exactly how/why this came to me, but it was definitely related to the "woke (character)" meme format or whatever that was around for a sec. I was thinking about how a portion of Yakov's self-hatred comes from an understanding that masculinity is inherently violent and evil and Yakov not wanting to be violent and evil means he'd much rather not be a man but it's not like he's NOT a man cause that's weird and Yakov is completely normal. This train of thought led to woke Yakov who actually loves pronouns (as opposed to regular Yakov who can't stand it whenever Samir starts talking about pronouns... or when Samir starts talking in general but whatever), and then I had the thought of "wait... the true woke Yakov is fantasy AU Yakov" since gender is considered to be a form of spiritual energy and fantasy AU Yakov just hoards it I guess. Greedy smh.

Right around this time I was inspired by the Slavic folklore tradition of loose, untidy hair symbolzing a wild, evil, or improper character to play around with the idea of "evil" shamans who purposefully left their hair unbraided to symbolize their refusal of culture norms. Also around this time I was doing a little rewrite of Yuka's character, and it only felt natural to make them originally be an evil shaman before becoming vodjmir. Then I decided to take it a bit further with evil non-binary cowboy shaman. Such is life.
Also I drew this in my notes for a very serious class about present-day issues in Indigenous communities. Yes, the same notes I drew the holy bath water in.

Whens steamed hams got popular I knew exactly what I had to do. The technical lore is that auroras only appear when there's a current vodjmir, so everyone obvs freaks out when it appears after Yuka accepts the title. The story behind it is the guys at the monastery up near the spring are like what the fuck? what the fuck?? when they see the aurora finally show up after several years pre-Ksunya's death so they go out and see this loser hanging around the spring and they're like... hey loser can you move before we call the cops? Then turns out the loser is the new vodjmir.
Also this was back before I had come up with the word "vodjmir" so the title was "Champion" instead. Like "Askr's Champion" or the "Champion of Sovskova." I think it's cute to think that's how it's translated into different languages like Fabaster to sorta keep the meta history of the word. And double also... yeah I got it from Breath of the Wild. What're you gonna do? Call Nintendo on me? Please don't

After coming up with the evil non-binary cowboy shaman idea, I knew I'd have to really sit down and figure out what Yuka's vodjmir fit really looked like. I wanted it to have elements of the evil fit while still being it's own (in the sense of remembering where you came from but also being a new person) so thought it'd be cool to keep the poncho idea but then have the open flap things turn into the single flap thing.

After the I added the braid idea, before the evil non-binary cowboy shaman arc was thought of, and definitely before I decided to make Yuka more visually distinct from Yakov (although the change wouldn't happen for a while, this image makes it more obvious since it's actually colored in). It's also cool cause you can see halfbloods (better known by humans as half-elves) were a lot more "human, but slightly to the left" than what you would expect from the offspring of two visually distinct species (naturally I would later decide that that was really really embarrassing so I threw together a new halfblood design alongside Yuka's redesign).
You can also see here I'm attempting to give them some tattoos. I go back and forth on whether halfbloods have snelven tipped ears so I thought maybe Yuka would get them as tattoos since Askr would have them (then I thought uhhh no that's kinda weird; now it's a 50/50 chance if a halfblooded individual inherits them, and Yuka just doesn't have them). I also tried some tattoos under the eyes to suggest the little triangular bits that Askr and Vonyova naturally have as hawks which I do think is cool. There were more ideas but uhhh they didn't look very good, like, at all.
